Head of Downstream

Maina is Standard Bank’s Head of Downstream in the Energy Coverage team. In this role, he is responsible for Standard Bank’s coverage of clients in the following segments: oil marketing/retailing, traders, and refineries.

Maina has 18 years’ experience in Corporate & Investment Banking in East Africa. Prior to joining Standard Bank, he spent 9 years working in Citigroup and Barclays in a career spanning corporate relationship management and investment banking (M&A and debt in power & energy, consumer, healthcare and retail sectors). Before becoming a banker, Maina, an English-trained lawyer, practiced corporate & commercial law for 6 years.

At Standard Bank, Maina has also previously served as Head of O&G Coverage, East Africa.

Maina’s transaction experience in banking has involved active participation in the full deal cycle including origination, negotiation, structuring and execution through to completion. In Energy, he has worked on transactions involving corporate and project finance, structured trade, in the downstream, midstream and upstream segments.
