Year in Review: A Message from the Executive Secretary
As 2024 comes to a close, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on the significant achievements and milestones our Association has reached this year.
It has been an incredibly dynamic 12 months for ARDA, with remarkable progress across all areas. My travels have taken me to 13 countries, including nine African nations, where I’ve had the privilege of engaging with ARDA members, sponsors, and stakeholders. These interactions have strengthened our community, fostered new collaboration opportunities, and advanced our shared goals.
The year began with several key events, including the High-Level Meeting of the OPEC-Africa Energy Dialogue on the sidelines of the Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES) in Cairo and the London Energy Forum during International Energy Week. A highlight of the year came in April, with our highest-attended ARDA Week conference in many years, where over 45 countries were represented. This event, held in Cape Town, also marked the launch of our first-ever Investment Forum, an important milestone for our Association.
In May, in partnership with the Global LPG Partnership (GLPGP), we announced a $1 billion fund at the IEA’s Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa in Paris. This fund aims to accelerate LPG sector development in Africa, driving private sector investments in both traditional LPG and renewable bioLPG, while contributing to a more sustainable, low-carbon future for the continent.
In July, we supported ARDA President Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid at the Ghana International Petroleum Conference (GhIPCon), where sessions focused on the opportunities presented by AfCFTA and local content development for the Ghanaian and African downstream sectors.
Summer saw official ARDA delegations visit Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire as we built momentum toward two key autumn forums: the Storage & Distribution and Jet Fuel Forum in Addis Ababa and the inaugural LPG Forum in Abidjan. Both events were highly successful and will remain highlights of the ARDA calendar for years to come.
In October, ARDA continued to promote regional collaboration and highlight the downstream sector’s vital role in Africa’s economic growth at the Angola Oil & Gas conference in Luanda, and the inaugural Crude Oil Refiners Association of Nigeria (CORAN) and OTL Downstream Energy Week conferences in Lagos. In November, we carried forward our successful advocacy for a just energy transition in Africa at the Africa Energy Week in Cape Town and the UNFCCC COP 29 meetings in Baku, Azerbaijan. Our focus was on key enablers to promote the widespread adoption of LPG and clean cooking across the continent.
This year also saw the success of our technical and support workgroup workshops in May and June, and a growing emphasis on training, with two successful ARDA training events held in Abidjan in November, sponsored by Soudotec and Neuman & Esser.
ARDA was also proud to round off the year with active participation in the first SIREXE conference in Abidjan, the first-ever event on the continent that showcased the symbiotic relationship between the Mining, Petroleum, and Renewables sectors in a world-class fashion.
Looking ahead, we are already planning for ARDA Week 2025 under the theme “Africa First: Delivering Our Energy Future.” As we prepare for next year, our focus remains on expanding our vibrant, unified community of downstream energy sector stakeholders, sharing best practices, and contributing to a just and equitable energy transition in Africa.
As the holiday season approaches, I wish all our members and sponsors a peaceful and restful break.
Thank you for your ongoing support, and I look forward to the exciting journey we will continue together in 2025.
Anibor Kragha, ARDA Executive Secretary.
